Refining Residency Policies for a University in Alberta

Case Study

Overview

A university in Alberta tasked Duklas Cornerstone Consulting Inc. (DCC Inc.) with reviewing and updating its academic residency regulations in early 2016. The project aimed to address trends in higher education, such as increased student mobility and flexible learning approaches, prompting the need for a comprehensive review of existing policies.

Method

DCC Inc. conducted an in-depth analysis of the university’s policies, benchmarked them against other Canadian institutions, and carried out a national survey to gather data on residency practices. Consultations with key stakeholders, including accreditation bodies and institutional representatives, provided additional insights and recommendations.

Recommendations

The final report presented strategic recommendations to enhance the university’s residency policies, including more flexible exemption frameworks and improved governance models. These changes aligned with accreditation standards and institutional goals, supporting the university’s commitment to student-centered values and quality assurance.

Since implementing the recommended changes, the university has seen improved student satisfaction and streamlined governance processes, reflecting the institution’s dedication to student success and institutional excellence.
